Home Based Therapeutic Services, frequently
referred to as HBTS, is a program for children between the
ages of 3 and 21 who have significant impairments in functioning
as a result of a developmental disability or a mental/behavioral
condition. These services are provided predominantly in the
child’s home and are designed to enhance the child’s overall
level of functioning. Parents are both encouraged and required
to participate in the treatment process with the HBTS team
which includes Clinical Supervisors, Family Support Coordinators,
and Direct Care Staff.
Our HBTS program was one of the original
programs for children with behavioral and/or cognitive impairments
in Rhode Island. The Olean Center started this program in
1993 with one child and has since successfully treated many
children by recognizing the major role the family plays in
direction and follow-through with treatment interventions.
The children’s program, HBTS, currently supports children with disabilities including Autistic Disorder,
Mental Retardation, Aspergers Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental
Disorder NOS, Attention Hyperactivity Disorder, Cerebral Palsy,
Global Developmental Delay, Oppositional-Defiant Disorder,
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder,
and Major Depressive Disorder.
The
Olean Center provides HBTS services through a Family Centered
approach which necessitates building a therapeutic relationship
with various members in the family. Families play a key role
in the planning process for treatment proposals and are continually
valued for their insights into treatment solutions. Direct
care staff are encouraged to view the child’s difficulties
and the family system in holistic terms in order to remain
open to the wide range of variables that may impact the observed
behaviors. Additionally, we have a parent consultant who is
involved in support groups for parents, is the editor of the
HBTS periodical called “The Communicator,” and will be part
of the quality assurance team. The HBTS program has
also established relationships with agencies such as mental health
clinics, visiting nurses, and treatment specials such as occupational
therapists, physical therapists, and speech and language pathologists
in efforts to meet the individual needs of each child and
their family.
Families residing in Westerly, Hopkinton,
Narragansett, South Kingtown, Charlestown and Richmond are
eligible to receive services through the Olean Center.
Referrals are accepted through any of the
State's CEDARR Centers.
Hours of service include mornings, afternoons
and weekends. Staff are available throughout the calendar year
and may be available on some holidays.
Children involved in the Olean Center's
programs are eligible to participate in a variety of
agency-sponsored activities.
HBTS
Home-Based Therapeutic Services is designed
to provide intensive, in-home support to families of children
with developmental disabilities. Service components
include:
Pre-Treatment:
A clinically intensive service that is designed to
introduce families and the Treatment Team to each other prior to
receiving intensive services.
Parent Orientation:
A mandatory program for parents entering HBTS at the
Olean Center; this program is designed to identify how families
and staff will work together throughout the course of services.
Intensive Treatment:
Services are provided by the Treatment Team,
including a Direct Care Staff, within the home and community
settings. Specific goals are addressed in the areas of behavior
management, self-help, parent education and socialization.
Treatment Support:
A less intensive category of therapy designed to
enhance the benefits of intensive treatment for children with
fewer behavioral concerns.
Post-Treatment:
A short-term service designed to assist families who are
terminating with HBTS to effectively transition to other
programs.
PASS
Personal Assistance Services and Supports is
a less intensive, parent-direct program intended to support
families with children who have developmental disabilities.
These services include:
Service Plan
Development: This aspect of the program is required
of all parents. With the assistance of a Support Coordinator,
families draft a treatment plan for their child and family.
Direct Services:
Support for the service plan is provided by a Direct Care
Staff. This individual is identified and trained by the child's
family. Hours per week are based on the severity of need.
Clinical
Consultation: This service is designed to provide the
family with clinical feedback on how to most effectively address
the areas of concern for their family.
