Join this couple, each with Down syndrome, on their wedding day and share the joys and trials of their first year of marriage
Mark your calendar for 7/7 at 6 p.m. for a reception and uplifting film at the United Theatre to benefit the Olean Center. On this special evening we are excited to premier a short film about the Olean Center followed by a screening of “Monica and David,” a film that explores the marriage of a young couple with Down syndrome, and the family and community who strive to support them.
“Monica and David” was voted Best Documentary Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival and earned an Emmy nomination for director-producer Alexandra Codina, who also succeeded in getting HBO to produce a movie about the couple.
In reviews for the film, Boston.com praised Codina for the intimacy they felt with Monica, David, and their family. Variety said the film was "Neither overly sentimental nor insistently uplifting” and credited Codina with an expertly edited documentary.
Codina is a first cousin to Monica and felt the need to produce the film after seeing responses to the announcement of her cousin’s wedding. While some considered it a “cute gesture between kids” Codina wanted to share her perspective of this “very powerful, very serious, very adult” decision.
Please join us on 7/7 at 6 p.m. and support children and adults served by the Olean Center. You can choose between a $50 admission to a reception and the film, or $25 for the pre-film reception only. You can buy tickets here from the United Theatre website. (The first screen will ask if you want to sign in – you can say NO to go straight to purchase tickets)
