A long-sought Parent Support Group for families serviced by the Children’s Department got off to a strong start in the fall. All indications are that this effort is well received in the community and will continue growing.
Meetings are scheduled for the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Olean Center from 5-6:30 p.m. The initial meetings were planned for just one hour, but the group quickly learned that more time was needed for the confidential conversations that take place and the support shared by all.
“We started this group to help with feelings of isolation for families and parents,” said Emma Collins, Family Support & Respite Coordinator. “It’s really creating a bond for families and the community.”
While the group is part of the Olean Center offerings, it is open to families outside of the Olean Center as well.
“Family support is such an important part of the work we do and this early response to our Parent Support Group is certainly demonstrating the need for this service in our community,” said Executive Director Ruth Tureckova.
Emma and Clinical Supervisor Claire Letizio help organize and lead the meetings. Parent Shaina McGinity serves as group facilitator and is helping to spread the word throughout the community via Facebook.
