John Nicolosi: Generous supporter, energetic volunteer

For more than two decades, John Nicolosi has been a constant, joyful presence at the Olean Center, someone who shows up with energy, ideas, and a genuine love for the people he serves.

John began volunteering while still working, fitting time at the Center into his afternoons. As he moved closer to retirement, that commitment only deepened. What started as helping out soon became an essential part of his life, as John found meaning and connection in spending time with participants and supporting experiences that brought people together.

John’s volunteering style is hands-on and creative. He doesn’t just participate, he looks for ways to make things better, more fun, and more inclusive.

“He’s always coming up with something new,” said Tabitha Brennan, Team Coordinator. “He’ll say, ‘Let’s do this, let’s do that and I’ll take care of it.’”

Social connection has always been especially important to John. Wanting to ensure participants continued to enjoy parties, outings, and special events, he established the John Nicolosi Fun Fund, which supports activities that enrich participants’ social lives and create lasting memories.

Staff quickly learned they could count on John for just about anything. From providing transportation to stepping in wherever help was needed, he consistently found ways to meet needs as they arose.

“If he saw a need, he found a way to fulfill it,” said Karen Babik, Director of Community Supports.

Now fully retired, John looks forward to spending even more time with his friends at the Olean Center, something he speaks about with pride and affection. For him, volunteering has never been about recognition, but about relationships. “I try to offer emotional support and simply be a friend,” John shared. “Being part of their lives is incredibly fulfilling. I get a great deal of satisfaction from giving of myself.”

Through his generosity, creativity, and genuine care, John Nicolosi has made a lasting impact on the Olean Center community, one built on friendship, fun, and a deep commitment to making a difference.
